Upcoming Training and Events - South Downs National Park Trip

Hello Reader,

We can now release the details of the special trip we have been planning with South Downs National Park.

Saturday 16th May, 8am meet up, return around 6:30pm
The South Downs National Park is a landscape rich in folklore and legend that has inspired generations of writers, artists and storytellers who have flocked to witness the beauty of the rolling chalk download and the wooded heaths of the National Park.

The focus of this visit is caring for our waterways. While visiting the river Meon, we will explore the different challenges our rivers and streams face and learn about how we can measure water health through testing, invertebrate monitoring and other Citizen Science activities.

Chalk streams are an incredibly rare habitat and we’re fortunate to have many of them in the South East. Connecting our communities with our rivers, and exploring the role we undertake as Rangers in making our communities comfortable in nature will be key discussion topics.

Our Learning Day Themes: Community engagement, rivers and streams, managing pollution

Accessibility Information: This trip is not wheelchair accessible due to the nature of spending time on river banks and other unpaved areas.

Travel Information: London National Park City will cover the travel costs, we will share more information around exact timings and location we will travel together from nearer the time.

Unfortunately as the National Park Staff will be picking us up in their jeeps from the train station and driving us across the landscape we are a bit limited in how many people they can take.

Due to this, we are asking folks to please register their interest for this trip. We will be prioritising giving spaces to Rangers who are working on, or planning to work on waterways projects in the first instance. If this isn't you there will still be a few extra tickets so do register your interest as long as you can definitely make the date!

Kew Gardens And LNPC Event on growing POC led collectives and community groups - Saturday 6th June

Created with Rangers Shukura, Becky, and Ingrina, the day is inspired by The Second Nature Report, showcasing how a rise in outdoor collectives led by underrepresented communities, particularly racialised groups in the UK, are reclaiming access to nature. We will explore the barriers to accessing nature within People of Colour (POC) communities, celebrate the work of existing community groups and dedicate plenty of time to sharing insights and best practices for a more inclusive, safe and joyful outdoor culture.

In the afternoon we will be exploring Kew's Grow Wild Community Growing Guide. Grow Wild is the national outreach programme from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, working in partnership with communities across the UK.
The Grow Wild team will lead us in a choice of three workshops exploring:

  • The importance of growing for biodiversity and planting for a changing climate.
  • How to sustainably build community growing projects by making the most of the resources we have.
  • Supporting leaders and volunteers to thrive.

Alongside this we will have guided tours of Kew and a somatic workshop from Ranger Omari! Don't miss out!

We look forward to seeing you soon!
