Introducing Citizen Friday! 48 hours until the feel good, no spend, citizen-centred alternative to Black Friday

Hello Reader,

We’re guessing that Friday 29th November (aka Black Friday) has already been on your radar for a while now. But did you know that just a year ago a new campaign was launched, which substitutes a day of all out consumerism for one that puts citizens, communities and change at its centre? Introducing Citizen Friday the brainchild of Re-Action Collective, a not-for-profit working towards a greener outdoor industry. The campaign’s ‘share, repair and get out in the fresh air’ tagline is the great way to say yes to people and experiences over profit margins and expenditure.

Gavin Fernie-Jones, Founder of Re-Action Collective, reveals how embracing #CitizenFriday - each and every Friday - has completely transformed the course of his life. Be inspired by his example in our blog post here.

Citizen Friday makes me think about what I need in my community to have real choice. It encourages me to think about what is important, and what makes me truly happy. The outcome of doing that weekly, as some kind of ritual, is that I realise that being happy has little to nothing to do with consuming. As a result I have more friends, spend more quality time with my family and community, and feel like I have a new purpose.

Citizen Friday is open-ended by its very nature and participants can give meaning and shape to the day in whichever way they see fit. But to get you started here’s a suggestion for each of the three key tenets.

REPAIR

Be inspired by the example of Ranger Elly Platt, who earlier this week took to the greenery surrounding the River Wandle to do an in-place textile repair. Also keep an eye on your inboxes for more details of our 2025 festival weeks, which includes our own nod to Repair Week.

GET OUT IN THE FRESH AIR
