Hello Reader We're very excited to let you know that Breda has been recognised as the first National Park City in the Netherlands, following an inspiring peer review process coordinated by the National Park City Foundation, with support from Salzburg Global, and World Urban Parks. Breda National Park City is a grassroots movement of all the people in the city working on transforming Breda into a city within a natural park. Nature enthusiasts, gardeners, artists, entrepreneurs, vegetable growers, tree planters – in short, everyone who wishes to enhance urban biodiversity can participate. Breda’s ambition is to become one of the most nature-rich cities in Europe by 2030, closely collaborating with the municipality of Breda, which shares the same goal within its urban planning policies. The first step towards this goal is recognition of the city’s status as a National Park City. Dan Raven-Ellisson, original founder of the National Park City movement, led the peer review visit and said “We have been highly impressed by Breda and the National Park City team. Breda’s National Park City journey is led by a highly skilled, enthusiastic and committed team. Together they have a deep understanding of the city, its people and nature, and have ambitious plans to make Breda greener, healthier, wilder and fairer.” We are very grateful to the Breda National Park City team, especially Joost Barendrecht and Tom Rozendal, along with the support of the many individuals, groups, and organisations, along with the leadership shown by the Municipality of Breda, all of whom have supported and contributed towards Breda becoming the first National Park City in the Netherlands. We’re especially thankful for the voluntary contributions, time, wisdom and experience from our expert peer reviewers, the staff and Trustees of the National Park City Foundation, and the many supporters of the National Park City movement. Breda is now the fourth city to be recognised as a National Park City, joining London (2019) and Adelaide (2021), and Chattanooga (2025) in securing the much coveted status. Nine other cities are currently on the journey to securing National Park City status. If you’d like to find out how your city could become a National Park City then why not join our next ‘What if your city was a National Park City?’ call. Thank you Mark
